Which diet is best?
Everyone wants to get rid of belly fat as fast as possible. But which diet is the most effective overall?
A new review* of 61 weight loss research studies found that a VLCD (very low calorie diet) meal replacement program was the fastest way to reduce visceral adipose tissue or belly fat.
What is a VLCD?
A VLCD uses nutritionally controlled meal replacements exclusively during a weight loss program.
The meal replacements meet scientific standards for reduced calories and optimal nutrients.
Although research on meal replacements began in the 1930's, commercially available products were not available until around 1979.
Hundreds of studies around the world have proven the general effectiveness of this diet using meal replacements that maintain complete daily nutrition while sharply reducing calories.
Because of individual differences, people wanting to use a VLCD exclusively should consult with their physician prior to beginning the diet.
This is especially true of anyone taking prescription medications as many conditions can normalize within the first day or two of the diet, requiring physician modification of prescription dosage to avoid an overdose.
Note: there are many products that try to appear like a meal replacement. Most will state "This is not a meal replacement" in microscopic print in very obscure places on the labels. They do not contain sufficient expensive ingredients like potassium, electrolytes, protein, or have nutrient ratios that have not been tested in hospitals.Watch out for fakes!
VLCD's to lose belly fat fast
*Scientists reviewed 61 weight loss research studies for effective results in losing abdominal or belly fat.
They found that only a VLCD diet program for less than 4 weeks gave exceptional belly fat loss.
After 14 weeks of dieting, all diets showed similar ratios of belly fat loss depending on the total amount of weight loss (Chaston TB, Factors associated with percent change in visceral versus subcutaneous abdominal fat during weight loss: findings from a systematic review, International Journal of Obesity-London, April 2008) .
