Watermelons are easy to take to a party or barbecue.
The only preparation needed is to cut them into slices.
Other ideas include sherbets, fruit salads, and salsas with red onion.
In some areas of the world, the rind can be served as pickles or candied.
Choosing a watermelon
You can now choose either seedless or the old-fashioned kind with black seeds.
The flesh is red, but there are a few with yellow flesh.
Heirloom varieties include different patterns or colors on the skin like Stars and Moon, but most watermelons are dark green (with or without stripes).
It should sound deep-pitched when you thump it and the skin should be without bruises.

While believed to originate in southern Africa, they were used in ancient Egypt and the seeds were discovered in the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun.
They are easy to grow in most home gardens, but the vines take up a lot of space.
