Calories In Cherries

How many calories in cherries?

There are 45 calories in a half cup of cherries weighing 70 grams according to the CDC.

There are 11 grams of carbohydrates and 10 of them are sugars.

As usual with fruits, there is no fat, cholesterol, or sodium.

There is 1 gram of protein, and 2 grams of dietary fiber.

Vitamins and minerals are low, and there is only 8% of Vitamin C daily value.

However, the sour red variety like Montgomery, and sweet dark red varieties like Bing, Lambert, and Black Republicans are excellent sources of anthocyanins for many health benefits.

Choosing a cherry

A ripe cherry of any color will be glossy and plump. It will feel hard to the touch rather than soft or flabby.

Avoid ones with bruises or broken skins. They will mold quickly which can spread to the other fruits.

They can be refrigerated for up to a week.

Always wash them before serving.

Serving cherries

When eating them fresh, most people learn how to chew the flesh off without biting into the hard pit which can damage teeth.

For cooking, however, the pit must be removed by hand or with the use of a simple pitter.

The sour variety is the favorite for bright red cherry pies, while the sweet varieties are used for fruit salads, side dishes, ice cream, and dessert sauces.
