Extra energy
People have brown fat or brown adipose tissue that burns calories throughout their body.
Unlike white fat used for storage,, this brown adipose tissue easily creates extra energy and fatburning capacity when it is stimulated.
How do you stimulate brown fat?
One way is to keep the outside temperature below 62 degrees F.
The lower temperature forces your body to use brown fat to increase heat production.
But this solution also increases the challenges to the immune system and may promote overeating.
Another way is to wait for drugs to be developed that might stimulate brown fat.
But there may be more choices.
Green tea thermogenesis
Several green tea studies may offer an alternative solution.
Green tea has been shown to have natural thermogenic effects that stimulate brown adipose tissue.
This fat burning quality was presumed to be caused by the caffeine content.
But researchers have found that green tea stimulates the brown calorie burning fat tissue more than can be attributed to the caffeine content and that a synergy may exist between caffeine and the green tea polyphenols called catechins.
Green tea catechins inhibit enzymes that degrade noradrenaline and caffeine inhibits enzymes that degrade the noradrenaline-induced cAMP.
Extra fatburning
Changing the inhibitory chemicals on this pathway increases and prolongs the body’s capacity to stimulate brown fat thermogenesis (Dulloo AG, Green tea and thermogenesis: interactions between catechin-polyphenols, caffeine, and sympathetic activity, International Journal Obesity Related Metabolic Disorders, February 2000).
So if you’re tired of shivering and waiting for a fat-burning boost, you might want to try an easy cup of green tea.
